Health Effects
The PFAS class includes thousands of synthetic compounds linked to various health effects including cancer, immune suppression, hormonal disruption, liver and kidney damage, and developmental problems. Effects vary by specific compound and exposure level.
Where It Comes From
A class of over 14,000 synthetic 'forever chemicals' used in non-stick coatings, waterproofing, food packaging, firefighting foams, and industrial processes. Extremely persistent - they do not break down in the environment or the human body.
Where It's Commonly Found
Ubiquitous in the environment. Found in municipal water supplies, private wells near industrial or military sites, and consumer products. Virtually all Americans have measurable PFAS in their blood.
EPA's 2024 PFAS rule regulates a Hazard Index of 1 (unitless) for mixtures of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS. Over 9,700 PFAS contamination sites identified nationally. Approximately 176 million Americans served by systems with detectable PFAS.
