PFBS (Perfluorobutane Sulfonic Acid)
Category: pfas
EPA MCL
Not regulated
Status
EPA Regulated
NSF Standard
NSF/ANSI 58
Health Effects
Short-chain PFAS with lower bioaccumulation than PFOA/PFOS but still persistent. Associated with thyroid effects, reproductive toxicity, and kidney effects in animal studies. Regulated under EPA's 2024 PFAS Hazard Index rule as part of a mixture assessment.
Where It Comes From
Short-chain PFAS used as a replacement for longer-chain compounds like PFOS. Used in industrial processes, firefighting foams, and consumer products. More mobile in groundwater than longer-chain PFAS.
Where It's Commonly Found
Found alongside other PFAS compounds near industrial facilities, military bases, and airports. More mobile in groundwater than PFOA/PFOS, so may travel farther from source.
No individual MCL - regulated under the PFAS Hazard Index (HI) of 1 along with PFHxS, PFNA, and HFPO-DA. Detected in hundreds of water systems under UCMR 5.
