PFBA (Perfluorobutanoic Acid)
Category: pfas
EPA MCL
Not regulated
Status
Unregulated
NSF Standard
NSF/ANSI 58
Health Effects
Short-chain PFAS with the shortest half-life in humans among commonly detected PFAS (~3 days vs years for PFOA). Associated with thyroid and liver effects in animal studies. Less studied than PFOA/PFOS.
Where It Comes From
Ultra-short-chain PFAS compound used in fluorochemical manufacturing and as a degradation product of other PFAS. Found in industrial discharge and is very mobile in water.
Where It's Commonly Found
Detected near fluorochemical manufacturing sites and areas with PFAS contamination. More mobile than longer-chain PFAS due to small molecular size. Often found alongside PFOA/PFOS.
Currently unregulated at the federal level. Not included in EPA's 2024 PFAS final rule. Detected in some water systems during UCMR 5 monitoring. Several states monitoring but no individual state MCLs established.
How to Remove It
