UV Disinfection

UV systems use ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate bacteria, viruses, and parasites. They don't filter particles - they disinfect. Essential for well water.

How It Works

Water flows through a stainless steel chamber containing a UV-C lamp (254 nm wavelength). The UV light damages the DNA of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing. NSF 55 Class A systems deliver a minimum dose of 40 mJ/cm2, which is sufficient to inactivate 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts. UV does not add chemicals or change water taste. The lamp requires annual replacement.

What It Removes

Removes Well

  • E. coli and coliform bacteria (99.99%)
  • Viruses including norovirus and hepatitis
  • Giardia and Cryptosporidium cysts
  • Other pathogenic microorganisms

Does NOT Remove

  • Any chemical contaminants (chlorine, lead, PFAS, VOCs)
  • Sediment or turbidity (must pre-filter to < 5 NTU for UV to work)
  • Dissolved minerals or hardness
  • Taste and odor

Installation

DIY moderate. Installs on the main water line or at point-of-use. Requires 1-inch plumbing connections and a nearby electrical outlet. Typically paired with a sediment pre-filter. Not a standalone solution - always used alongside other filtration.

Who Should Choose UV Disinfection?

Good fit if you...

  • Private well owners (EPA does not regulate private wells)
  • Homes with a history of coliform or E. coli detections
  • Off-grid and rural properties using surface water
  • Anyone wanting chemical-free disinfection (no chlorine taste)

Not ideal if you...

  • Municipal water (already disinfected at the treatment plant)
  • Standalone use - must be paired with sediment pre-filtration
  • Homes with high turbidity water (UV is ineffective if water is cloudy)
  • Budget-limited buyers who only need taste improvement
